Customs duty is a percentage of the customs value of the goods. Countries value goods in one of two ways. CIF (cost, insurance and freight) includes shipping and insurance, and is used by the EU, UK and most of the world. FOB (free on board) counts the goods only, and is used by the US, Canada and Australia. Import VAT or GST is then usually charged on the customs value plus the duty. Many countries don't charge duty below a small value threshold, called de minimis. Some also waive VAT below it. The real duty rate depends on the product's HS tariff code and its country of origin. The category presets are only rough examples, so look up your exact rate in your country's tariff database.

CIF includes shipping and insurance in the customs value, and FOB counts only the goods. CIF produces a higher duty for the same rate.
