How to calculate sales tax or VAT

Percentage-based taxes use the same core arithmetic whether they are called sales tax, VAT, GST, or another consumption tax. Choose the mode that matches the number you already have, then enter the applicable rate.

Add tax to a price

Multiply the pre-tax price by the rate, then add the tax amount to find the final price.

Remove included tax

Divide the tax-inclusive total by one plus the rate as a decimal to recover the price before tax.

Find tax only

Multiply the taxable price by the rate when you need the tax amount without changing the original price.

Example: At a 10% rate, tax on $100 is $100 × 0.10 = $10. The tax-inclusive total is $110. To remove that included tax, calculate $110 ÷ 1.10 = $100.

Tax calculator FAQ

How do I add tax to a price?

Multiply the price by the tax rate divided by 100. Add that tax amount to the original price to get the tax-inclusive total.

How do I remove tax from a total?

Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For example, divide a total with 20% included tax by 1.20.

Can I use this for sales tax, VAT, or GST?

Yes. The calculation works for any simple percentage-based tax. Be sure to use the rate and rounding rules that apply to your purchase or jurisdiction.

Why might my receipt differ by a cent?

Businesses may round tax per item, per line, or on the complete transaction. Those methods can occasionally produce a small difference.

Is my tax information private?

Yes. Calculations happen in your browser. Your latest amount, rate, currency, and mode are saved only in local browser storage on this device.

Please note: This calculator provides a general mathematical estimate, not tax or financial advice. Rates, exemptions, and rounding rules vary by location and transaction.
