VAT vs sales tax
VAT is charged at each stage of production and usually included in shelf prices. US sales tax is added at the till and varies by state and city.
Choose whether your price already includes VAT, enter the amount and pick a country or type any rate. The calculator shows the net amount, the VAT and the gross total.

Adding VAT is simple: gross = net × (1 + rate). Removing VAT is where people often go wrong. You can't just subtract the rate from a gross price. You divide by (1 + rate). For example, at 20%, a gross price of 120 has a net of 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 and 20 of VAT, not 120 − 24 = 96. Equivalently, the VAT inside a gross price is gross × rate ÷ (1 + rate), which is one-sixth of the price at 20%. The presets show each country's standard rate. Many countries also have reduced rates for food, books or energy, which you can type in as a custom rate.

Governments adjust VAT rates from time to time. Check the current rate with your tax authority before filing or invoicing.
Divide the gross price by 1.2. The VAT is the difference, or gross ÷ 6.
Multiply the net price by (1 + rate). At 20%, multiply by 1.2.
