How to use the price per unit comparator

Why bigger isn't always cheaper

Stores often price larger packages at a worse per-unit rate than smaller ones, especially during promotions on smaller sizes. The only reliable way to compare is price per unit — price divided by quantity — rather than sticker price or package size alone.

Comparing a 12 oz bag against a 1 lb (16 oz) bag only works if you convert both to the same unit first.

How is price per unit calculated?

Price per unit = price ÷ quantity. For example, a $4.50 bottle containing 30 ounces costs $0.15 per ounce.

Why do I need to keep units consistent?

Comparing a price per ounce to a price per gram (or per item vs. per pack) gives a meaningless result. Convert every product's quantity to the same unit before comparing.

What counts as the best value?

The product with the lowest price per unit is highlighted as the best value, assuming all quantities were entered in the same unit.
