How to make a spot-the-difference puzzle

  1. Choose a modeUpload one photo to have differences added, or two near-identical photos to detect their differences.
  2. Tune and createPick how many differences to add, or adjust sensitivity and minimum size for detection.
  3. Play or downloadTap differences on either picture, or download the puzzle and answer key PNGs.

How the puzzles are made

In two-photo mode the pictures are scaled to the same size and compared pixel by pixel on a reduced grid, which smooths out noise from compression. Areas that differ by more than the sensitivity threshold are grouped into regions, tiny regions are ignored and overlapping ones merged. For best results take both photos from a tripod or the same position and change a few objects between shots.

In one-photo mode the tool picks spots that do not overlap and changes them: swapping colors, mirroring a section, erasing a detail or adding a small shape. Each change is checked to make sure it is actually visible before it is used.

Easy

3 to 5 differences on a busy picture are great for young children.

Hard

10 to 12 differences make a real challenge for adults.

Two photos

Keep lighting the same between shots to avoid false differences.

Spot the difference FAQ

Why were too many differences found?

Lighting, camera movement and compression create small changes. Lower the sensitivity or raise the minimum size.

Do my photos need to be the same size?

No. The second photo is scaled to match the first, but they should show the same framing.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. All processing happens in your browser and nothing leaves your device.

Can I print the puzzle?

Yes. Download the puzzle PNG and answer key and print them like any image.

Why do I only get a few differences on my photo?

Each difference needs its own space. Large photos with plenty of detail allow more non-overlapping changes.
