Your photo is scaled to fit the board and divided into a grid that matches its shape, so a wide landscape gets more columns and a tall portrait more rows. Every shared edge between two pieces gets a random tab on one side and a matching blank on the other, drawn with smooth curves just like a cardboard jigsaw. Border pieces keep straight outer edges, which is what makes edge pieces first such a useful strategy.
A piece only locks when it is dropped close to its true position on the board, so you can arrange pieces freely around the board first. The ghost image shows a faint copy of the picture on the board if you need a hint.
