Each paver covers its own face area plus half of the joint around it. The calculator adds the joint gap to the paver length and width before dividing the patio area by that footprint. This gives the exact number of pavers needed to fill the space. It then adds a waste allowance for cuts along edges and curves, and for broken pieces. Use about 5% for simple rectangles, 10% for most patios and 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns. A standard installation sits on a layer of compacted gravel base with a thin screeded layer of bedding sand on top, so the calculator estimates both volumes as well.
Walkways and patios usually need 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) of compacted base. Driveways need 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm).
A 1 in (2.5 cm) layer of coarse concrete sand is standard under pavers. Don't make it thicker, or the pavers can rut.
Buy 5% extra for simple rectangular layouts, 10% for typical patios and 15% or more for herringbone or diagonal patterns with many cuts.
Yes. Even a 1/8 in (3 mm) joint reduces the number of pavers needed noticeably over a large area, so the calculator includes it in each paver's footprint.
