Mulch is sold by volume, either in bags of 2 or 3 cubic feet (40 to 70 liters in metric countries) or in bulk by the cubic yard or cubic meter. The calculator finds the area of each bed, multiplies the total by the depth to get the volume, and divides by the bag size. Bags are rounded up to whole bags. One cubic yard covers about 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches or 108 square feet at 3 inches. For larger areas, bulk delivery is often cheaper than bags. Enter both prices to compare them.
Use 2 to 3 inches for most beds and 3 to 4 inches around trees. Keep mulch a few inches away from stems and trunks to prevent rot.
If old mulch is still in place, you usually only need about 1 inch of fresh mulch to refresh the color and cover.
There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, so it takes 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet or 9 bags of 3 cubic feet.
Most gardeners use 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm). Thinner layers let weeds through, and mulch much deeper than 4 inches can starve roots of air.
