The calculator multiplies the area by the depth to get the volume, then adds your waste allowance. It multiplies that volume by the density of the material to get the weight. Suppliers sell gravel by the cubic yard or by the ton, so both are shown. Density depends on the stone type, its moisture and how well it is graded. Crushed stone and pea gravel usually weigh about 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard. Dense-graded road base with fines can weigh 1.5 tons or more. If your supplier gives a density, type it into the density field for the most accurate result.
Walkways: 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm). Patio base: 4 in (10 cm). Driveways: 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) over a compacted sub-base.
Gravel settles and compacts, and ground is rarely perfectly level. An extra 5 to 10% saves you a second delivery.
