Why use a Lean Canvas

Fast

Write a business plan in minutes, not weeks.

Focused on risk

Problem, customers and metrics come first, where startups usually fail.

Easy to update

Change hypotheses as you learn from interviews and experiments.

How to fill in a Lean Canvas

  1. Start with the problemList the top three problems and who has them, plus existing alternatives.
  2. Define your offerWrite a unique value proposition, the solution, channels and pricing.
  3. Measure and protectAdd costs, key metrics and any unfair advantage, then export.

Lean Canvas blocks explained

The Lean Canvas forces you to state the problem before the solution. Customer segments should identify early adopters - the people who feel the problem most and will try an imperfect product.

The unique value proposition is a single clear message that says why you are different and worth attention. A high-level concept, like "YouTube for cooking classes", makes it easy to remember.

Problem + segments

Who hurts and how they cope today.

UVP + solution

Why you, and the simplest thing that works.

Metrics

The few numbers that show progress.

Lean Canvas FAQ

What is a Lean Canvas?

An adaptation of the Business Model Canvas by Ash Maurya for startups. It replaces partners, activities, resources and relationships with problem, solution, key metrics and unfair advantage - the things that matter most under high uncertainty.

In what order should I fill it in?

Problem and customer segments first, then the unique value proposition, solution, channels, revenue streams, cost structure, key metrics and finally unfair advantage. The numbers on each block follow this order.

What is an unfair advantage?

Something that cannot easily be copied or bought, such as insider information, a network effect, a community, existing customers or a unique team. It is fine to leave it blank at first.

How detailed should it be?

Short bullet points. A Lean Canvas is a snapshot of your current hypotheses, meant to be updated as you learn from customers.

Can I save several versions?

Save a JSON file for each version and load it back any time. The current canvas is also kept in this browser.
