How the emboss filter works

Embossing compares each pixel's brightness with a neighbor in the direction of the light and the opposite neighbor on the other side. Where brightness rises toward the light, the result gets lighter; where it falls, it gets darker. Flat areas end up mid-gray, while edges turn into raised ridges with a highlight and a shadow.

Depth sets how far apart the compared pixels are, which widens the ridges. Strength multiplies the difference for more contrast. Engrave flips the sign so shapes look carved in, and the color mode adds the relief on top of the original colors instead of gray.

Light angle

135 degrees lights the image from the top left, the classic embossed look.

Engrave

Inverted relief makes logos and text look cut into the surface.

Metal tints

Gold and stone styles color the relief for quick material mockups.

Emboss effect FAQ

What is the difference between emboss and engrave?

Emboss makes shapes appear raised from the surface; engrave makes them look carved into it. The tool simply flips the direction of the lighting.

Why is my image mostly gray?

That is how embossing works: flat areas become neutral gray and only edges get highlights and shadows. Use color emboss to keep the original colors.

Which images work best?

High-contrast images such as logos, text, coins and line art give crisp, clean relief.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. PNG downloads keep the original transparency.

Is anything uploaded?

No. All processing happens in your browser.
