How the comic effect is built

Real comic art combines flat, limited colors with bold ink outlines and printed halftone shading. This tool recreates that recipe with three canvas techniques layered together.

Posterized color

Each color channel is rounded down to a small number of steps, turning smooth gradients into the flat, punchy color blocks typical of comic art.

Sobel edge outlines

A 3x3 Sobel convolution kernel measures brightness change in every direction. Wherever that change is sharp, the pixel is inked black to form an outline.

Halftone shading

A grid of dots is drawn over darker regions, with dot size scaled to local brightness, mimicking the printed dot shading of newsprint comics.

One intensity dial

The intensity slider scales edge sensitivity and color posterization together, so a single control moves the whole look from subtle to full comic panel.

How does the comic book effect work?

The tool reduces the photo's colors to a small posterized palette, runs a Sobel edge-detection convolution to find outlines, draws those outlines in dark ink, and optionally overlays a halftone dot pattern for shaded areas, similar to classic comic printing.

What does the intensity slider control?

Higher intensity detects more edges as ink outlines and reduces the color palette further for a bolder, more graphic look. Lower intensity keeps more of the original photo's detail and colors.

What are the halftone dots for?

Halftone dots simulate the printed dot shading used in traditional comic books and newspapers, adding texture to darker areas of the image.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?
