How the X-ray effect is built

Real X-ray images work by contrast: dense material appears bright, everything else stays dark. This effect recreates that impression using standard image processing on ordinary photos.

Luminance inversion

Each pixel's brightness is calculated and inverted, so light areas of the photo turn dark and dark areas turn bright, much like a photographic negative.

Sobel edge glow

A 3x3 Sobel kernel measures how sharply brightness changes at every pixel. Strong edges are boosted, adding a glowing outline along contours.

Scan tint

The final brightness value is mapped through a two-color gradient, from near-black to a bright cyan or green, for a familiar scan-screen appearance.

Adjustable intensity

The intensity slider scales how strongly the edge glow is added on top of the inverted base image, from subtle to dramatic.

How does the X-ray effect work?

The photo is converted to grayscale and inverted so bright areas turn dark and dark areas turn bright, similar to a photographic negative. A Sobel edge-detection pass then adds a glow along contours, and the result is optionally colorized with a cyan or green tint to resemble a scan.

What does the intensity slider control?

Intensity controls how strongly detected edges glow on top of the inverted base image. Higher values create a more dramatic, high-contrast scan look.

Can I turn off the color tint?

Yes. Choose the Monochrome option to keep a pure grayscale inverted result instead of a cyan or green tint.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The effect is computed entirely on a canvas element in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded.
