Video & GIF Caption Overlay

Add meme-style or subtitle-style text to a clip. Style the font, outline and background, set when it appears, preview it live and export the result.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to any server.

Why add captions in the browser

Instant preview

Every style change redraws immediately, so you see exactly what will be burned into the clip.

Readable anywhere

A thick outline or background box keeps text legible on bright and busy footage.

No upload, no watermark

Files are processed locally and exported without any branding.

How to use the caption overlay tool

  1. Load a clipDrop a video, GIF or image to start.
  2. Style the captionType your text, then pick the font, colors, outline, position and box.
  3. ExportRecord a captioned WebM for video, or download a PNG frame.

How caption export works

The preview is a canvas that draws the current video frame and then your caption on top using the same font, outline and box settings. When you export a video, the tool restarts the clip from the beginning and records that canvas in real time with the browser's MediaRecorder, optionally mixing in the original audio through the Web Audio API.

Because recording happens in real time, a 30-second clip takes about 30 seconds to export, and the tab should stay visible so the browser does not throttle it. GIFs and images are exported as a PNG with the caption applied, which is ideal for reaction images and memes.

Classic meme style

Impact in white with a thick black outline is the default and reads well on almost anything.

Subtitle style

Switch to Arial, lower the size and add a 60% black box for a clean subtitle look.

Timed captions

Show the text only between two timestamps to reveal a punchline at the right moment.

Caption overlay tool FAQ

Can I export an animated GIF?

Animated GIFs are exported as a single PNG frame with the caption. To caption an animated clip, use a video file and export it as WebM.

Why is the export WebM and not MP4?

Browsers record canvases with MediaRecorder, which outputs WebM in most browsers. Some browsers, such as Safari, may produce MP4 instead, and the file extension is set automatically.

Does the export keep the original audio?

Yes when "Include audio in export" is checked and your browser supports Web Audio capture. Uncheck it for a silent clip.

Why does exporting take as long as the video?

The canvas is recorded while the video plays at normal speed, so export time matches the clip length.

Is there a resolution limit?

Wide videos are scaled to at most 1280 pixels wide to keep recording smooth.
