The calculator treats your bed as a simple grid: the number of rows that fit across the bed's width is the width divided by the between-row spacing, rounded down, and the number of plants that fit along each row is the length divided by the in-row spacing, also rounded down. Multiplying the two gives the total plant count. Rounding down (floor division) matters because a partial row or a partial plant position isn't a usable spot — if your bed is 46 inches wide and rows need 24 inches apart, only one full row fits, with 22 inches left over that can't fit a second row at that spacing. The built-in spacing presets cover around fifteen common vegetables drawn from widely used general planting guidelines, such as carrots needing only a few inches between plants versus tomatoes needing two to three feet. These are typical averages; specific varieties, trellising and intensive or square-foot gardening methods can all call for tighter or wider spacing than shown here.

The bed width is divided by the between-row spacing (rounded down) to get the number of rows, and the bed length is divided by the in-row spacing (rounded down) to get plants per row. Total plants is rows multiplied by plants per row, which correctly ignores leftover space that isn't wide or long enough for another plant.
