Descriptions longer than the snippet area end in an ellipsis and can lose the call to action.
Phones typically show fewer characters, so lead with the most important information.
Google's desktop snippets usually show about two lines of 14-pixel Arial text, roughly 920 pixels or 150 to 160 characters. Mobile snippets often show around 680 pixels, or about 120 characters. This checker measures the pixel width of your text and compares it against both limits.
Descriptions under 70 characters rarely give enough context and are more likely to be replaced by Google with text taken from your page. A description between 120 and 158 characters with the main benefit in the first 120 works well on both devices.
