About Breakout

Breakout is one of the earliest arcade games built around a single elegant idea: a ball you control indirectly, through where you place a paddle rather than the ball itself. That indirection is what makes it interesting decades later — you're always aiming a few moments ahead of where the ball actually is.

This version keeps the core loop intact: angle-based paddle bounces, a full grid of bricks per level, and a ball that gradually speeds up as you clear more of the board.

Aim with the edges of the paddle

Hitting the ball near the tip of the paddle sends it off at a steep angle, which is useful for reaching bricks in the corners.

Dig a tunnel

Clearing a narrow column all the way up lets the ball bounce around the top of the board and clear bricks on its own.

Track the speed increase

The ball moves faster as you clear more bricks, so react a little earlier as a level goes on.

Stay centered between hits

Returning toward the middle of the play area after each bounce gives you more time to react to the next one.

Breakout FAQ

Questions about controls, bouncing and difficulty.

How do I move the paddle?

Move your mouse or drag your finger across the game area to slide the paddle, or use the left and right arrow keys as a fallback.

How do I launch the ball?

Click or tap the game area, or press the spacebar, whenever the ball is resting on the paddle.

Does where I hit the ball with the paddle matter?

Yes. Hitting the ball near the edge of the paddle sends it off at a sharper angle, while hitting it near the center sends it back more directly.

What happens when I lose a life?

The ball resets onto the paddle and waits for you to launch it again. Losing all three lives ends the run.

Does the game get harder?

Yes. The ball speeds up gradually as you clear bricks, and clearing a full level advances you to a faster, fresh layout.
