We underestimate meetings and messages; a log shows the true split.
Gaps and fragmented blocks reveal where focus leaks away.
Real numbers make it easier to cut, delegate or batch work.
A time audit is a short experiment: for one to two weeks you record everything you do in blocks of 15 to 60 minutes. At the end you total the time per category and compare it with what you think matters most. Most people discover far more time in meetings, messaging and context switching than they expected.
Keep categories few and broad so logging stays quick. Log in real time with the timer, or catch up every couple of hours. The breakdown works on a single day, the last seven days or everything you have logged.
Aim to protect at least two to four hours of focused work on most days.
If meetings top 40% of your week, look for ones to shorten or skip.
Large gaps often hide switching cost and small interruptions.
One week gives a useful picture; two weeks smooths out unusual days.
