Understanding the calculation

This calculator implements the Sunrise/Sunset Algorithm published in the Almanac for Computers (1990), the same formula behind many popular sunrise-sunset tools. It uses a zenith angle of 90.833°, which accounts for both atmospheric refraction and the sun's apparent disk size, matching the commonly used definition of sunrise and sunset.

Why UTC first

The formula naturally produces a time in Coordinated Universal Time, independent of any time zone database.

Approximate local time

Local time is estimated by rounding longitude ÷ 15 to the nearest hour — a rough zone guess, not an authoritative lookup.

Polar edge cases

Near the poles, the sun can stay up or stay down all day depending on the season; the tool detects and reports this.

What algorithm does this calculator use?

It implements the well-known Sunrise/Sunset Algorithm from the Almanac for Computers (1990), the same formula used by many popular sunrise-sunset calculators, using a zenith angle of 90.833° to account for atmospheric refraction and the sun's apparent size.

Why does it show both a UTC time and an approximate local time?

The algorithm calculates sunrise and sunset in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Since this tool does not look up your location's actual time zone or daylight-saving rules, it also offers a rough local estimate based on your longitude, clearly labeled as approximate.

What happens near the poles?

In some seasons, locations near the poles experience continuous daylight ("midnight sun") or continuous darkness ("polar night"). When the math detects one of these cases, the tool shows a clear message instead of a time.
