Why a visual step goal helps

A step count on its own is just a number; seeing it as a ring closing in on a target makes progress instantly obvious, without doing mental math.

Instant feedback

The ring animates every time you log steps, so progress feels immediate rather than abstract.

A clear finish line

The celebratory state at 100% gives you an unambiguous signal that today's goal is done.

Weekly context

The 7-day chart shows whether today is a one-off or part of a pattern.

About step goals and daily consistency

Step count targets became popular largely because 10,000 steps a day was an easy, round marketing number from a 1960s Japanese pedometer campaign, not a number derived from a specific health study — but the underlying idea, that a visible daily movement target improves consistency, holds up well regardless of which exact number you use. What matters more than the goal's precise size is whether you can see your progress toward it clearly enough to adjust your day, which is the entire reason this tool exists as a ring rather than a plain number. The ring's fill is capped visually at 100% even if you log more steps, so a big day doesn't distort the shape, while the percentage and step counts underneath keep showing your real numbers. Because the daily total is keyed to the calendar date rather than a rolling 24-hour window, logging steps late at night correctly counts toward that calendar day and a fresh entry starts at midnight. The 7-day chart pulls from the same saved history as the ring, so there's only one source of truth for your step data, all of it stored locally in your browser rather than synced to any external service or fitness account.

Where 10,000 came from

A 1960s pedometer marketing number, not a clinical threshold — use whatever goal fits you.

Calendar-day tracking

Steps are logged against the actual date, so your history stays accurate day to day.

One data source

The ring and the weekly chart both read from the same saved local history.

Step goal progress ring FAQ

How do I log today's steps?

Type a number directly into the steps field, or use the +100 and +1000 buttons to add to your running total. Every change saves automatically.

Does my step goal stay saved?

Yes. Your daily step goal is saved to your browser's local storage, so it's remembered the next time you open the tool.

What happens when I reach my goal?

The ring fills completely, switches to a celebratory color, and a Goal reached message appears. The ring stays full even if you keep logging more steps past your goal.

Can I see how I did on previous days?

Yes. Below the ring is a 7-day bar chart showing the steps you logged each day against a dashed line marking your current goal.

Is this synced with a fitness tracker or phone step counter?

No. This is a manual entry tool with no device pairing or account, so you enter your step count yourself and it's saved privately in your browser only.
