Why practice with random rhythms

No memorizing

Fresh patterns every time mean you are truly reading, not playing from memory.

Match your level

Only use the note values you have learned and add rests or dotted notes when ready.

Hear it right

Playback with a click shows exactly how the rhythm should sound against the beat.

How to use the rhythm generator

  1. Choose meter and valuesSet the time signature, number of bars and the note lengths to include.
  2. Generate and countRead the counting syllables under each note: 1 e & a in simple time.
  3. Clap alongPlay it back with a count-in and metronome, loop it and clap or tap with it.

How the rhythms are built

Each bar is filled from left to right with note values you selected, using placement rules that keep the beat visible: half notes start on strong beats, quarter notes start on a beat and dotted notes are followed by the short value that completes the beat. This keeps patterns readable rather than random-looking.

In simple meters such as 4/4 the quarter note gets the beat and is counted 1 e & a. In compound meters such as 6/8 the beat is a dotted quarter and eighth notes are counted 1 2 3 4 5 6. Playback treats the tempo as quarter notes per minute in every meter.

Simple time

2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 5/4 divide each beat into two or four.

Compound time

6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 divide each beat into three eighths.

Rests

Raise the rest slider to practice silence, which is often harder than notes.

Rhythm pattern generator FAQ

Why are some note values not appearing?

Values only appear where they fit the beat structure. For example, a whole note needs a 4/4 bar and dotted eighths need sixteenths enabled.

Can I use it for drum practice?

Yes. Loop a pattern and play it on a snare or practice pad while the metronome keeps time.

Why do the note symbols look odd?

They use Unicode music symbols, which some fonts lack. The note name and counting below each symbol always show the value.

What does count-in do?

It plays one bar of clicks before the rhythm so you know the tempo before you start.

Does the tempo change the pattern?

No. Tempo only affects playback speed. Generate a new pattern to change the rhythm.
