How the readability scores are calculated

This checker splits text into sentences using punctuation, counts words, and estimates syllables with a vowel-group heuristic. Those three numbers feed the Flesch Reading Ease formula (206.835 − 1.015 × average sentence length − 84.6 × average syllables per word) and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula (0.39 × average sentence length + 11.8 × average syllables per word − 15.59).

What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?

It is a 0-100 scale where higher scores mean easier reading. It is calculated from average sentence length and average syllables per word.

What is the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level?

It estimates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand the text, using the same sentence length and syllable data as the Reading Ease score.

How are syllables counted?

This tool uses a vowel-group heuristic with common adjustments for silent e and -es or -ed suffixes. It is a fast estimate rather than a dictionary lookup.

What is a good readability score for general audiences?

Most general-audience writing aims for a Flesch Reading Ease score of 60 to 70, roughly an 8th to 9th grade reading level.
