Why play planning poker

Avoid anchoring

Secret votes stop the loudest voice setting the number.

Surface assumptions

Different estimates reveal hidden complexity or misunderstandings.

Team ownership

Everyone who does the work has a say in the estimate.

How to run a round

  1. Set upAdd players, choose a deck and type the story title.
  2. Vote in secretPass the device; each player reveals the cards, picks one and hides it.
  3. Reveal and agreeReveal all cards, discuss outliers, then save the agreed estimate.

Planning poker basics

Planning poker is a consensus estimation game. Cards follow a growing sequence, like Fibonacci, because uncertainty grows with size: the difference between 1 and 2 points is meaningful, between 20 and 21 it is not.

When estimates are far apart, the people with the highest and lowest cards explain their thinking. Usually one re-vote is enough to converge.

Fibonacci

0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34.

Modified

0, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20, 40, 100.

Planning poker FAQ

How does voting work without a server?

Everything runs on one device. The screen asks each player to take the device, pick a card and hide it again before passing it on. Nobody sees other votes until the reveal.

What do ? and the coffee cup mean?

"?" means the voter is unsure and needs more information. The coffee cup asks for a break. Both are excluded from the statistics.

Which deck should I use?

Modified Fibonacci (0, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20, 40, 100) is the most common. T-shirt sizes suit early, rough sizing.

What happens when votes differ?

The highest and lowest voters are highlighted so they can explain their reasoning. Then re-vote or agree an estimate.

Is the history saved?

Yes, players, deck and estimate history are stored in this browser. Export a CSV to share.
