Why measure time spent waiting

Invisible time

Waiting happens in small slices, so it rarely feels like much until you add it up.

Seeing your biggest category shows where a podcast, a book or a schedule change helps most.

A reality check

It is a reminder that patience is a skill you practice every single day.

How to use the life spent waiting calculator

  1. Set the basicsEnter your age, when to start counting, hours awake and life expectancy.
  2. Estimate your waitingAdjust the minutes per day for each category to match your life.
  3. Read the resultsSee the percentage of your waking life, totals so far and ahead, and the breakdown.

How the percentage is calculated

Your daily waiting minutes are added up and divided by the minutes you are awake each day, which gives the share of your waking life spent waiting. Totals so far multiply your daily minutes by 365.25 days per year for every year since your counting start age; totals ahead do the same up to your life expectancy. The whole-life percentage spreads those minutes over every hour of your life, including sleep and early childhood.

The default category values are rough everyday estimates, not survey data, so change them to fit your routine. Commuters in big cities may wait far longer in traffic, while remote workers may spend more time watching progress bars.

Life spent waiting calculator FAQ

Are the default numbers based on research?

They are rough everyday estimates meant as a starting point. Replace them with your own numbers for a personal result.

Why start counting at age 12?

Young children wait too, but their time is shaped by adults. Change the start age to any value you like.

Does commuting count as waiting?

Only the stop-and-go part. Put red lights and traffic jams under traffic; moving travel time is not really waiting.

How can I waste less time waiting?

Batch errands, shop at off-peak hours, use online booking and keep a book or podcast handy for the waiting you cannot avoid.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser.
