Why use a tritone effect

On-brand imagery

Recolor any photo in your brand palette so a whole set of images feels consistent.

Poster-ready drama

Three-color mapping creates bold, graphic looks for covers and posters.

More depth than duotone

A dedicated midtone color adds richness that two colors cannot.

How to make a tritone image

  1. Upload a photoDrop in any image; portraits and high-contrast scenes work well.
  2. Pick three colorsChoose a preset or set shadow, midtone and highlight colors yourself.
  3. Adjust and downloadMove the midpoint, tweak contrast and mix, then save your image.

How the tritone effect works

The photo is first converted to brightness values from 0 to 255. Those values are then mapped through a three-stop gradient: black areas take the shadow color, the brightness at the midpoint takes the midtone color, and white takes the highlight color, with smooth blends in between. This is often called a gradient map.

Moving the midpoint changes how much of the image is colored by the shadow-to-midtone blend versus the midtone-to-highlight blend. Contrast and brightness are applied before mapping, and the mix slider blends the result back with the original colors for a subtler tint.

Gradient map

The same technique designers use in photo editors for duotones and tritones.

Midpoint

Lower it to push more of the image into the highlight color.

Mix

Below 100 percent keeps some of the original color for a tinted look.

Tritone effect FAQ

What is the difference between duotone and tritone?

A duotone maps an image to two colors and a tritone to three. The extra midtone color gives smoother transitions and richer results.

Which colors work best?

Use a dark shadow color, a bright highlight color and a saturated midtone. Keeping the shadow darker than the highlight preserves the photo's detail.

Can I recreate a print tritone?

Yes. Choose ink-like colors such as black, a brown or blue and a warm off-white to mimic classic printed tritones.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. PNG downloads keep transparent areas.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser.
