How to use the sleep total calculator

This free online tool multiplies the number of nights in a date range by your average hours of sleep per night, then converts the result into hours, full 24-hour days, and full weeks so the number is easy to picture.

  1. Enter your average sleepType how many hours you typically sleep per night.
  2. Set your date rangeKeep the default this-year range or pick custom start and end dates.
  3. See your totalView total hours, days and weeks slept over that range.

How is total sleep calculated?

The calculator counts every night between your start date and end date, then multiplies that count by the average hours you sleep per night. The total hours are then converted into full 24-hour day equivalents and full weeks, giving you a few different ways to picture the same number.

Why start on January 1?

The default start date is January 1 of the current year, so the calculator shows a running this-year total out of the box. You can change it to any date you like.

Custom ranges work too

Want your total since a birthday, a move, or the day you started a new job? Just change the start and end dates for a custom-range total.

Hours, days and weeks

Seeing "1,825 hours" is hard to picture. Seeing "about 76 full days, or nearly 11 weeks" of sleep tells a much more relatable story.

Sleep total calculator FAQ

Quick answers about calculating how much you've slept this year.

How is my total sleep calculated?

The calculator counts the nights between your start date and end date, then multiplies that by the average hours you sleep per night. The result is shown in hours and in full 24-hour days.

What start date should I use?

The default is January 1 of the current year, so you get a this-year total. You can change it to any date, such as a birthday or the day you started tracking sleep, for a custom range.

Is 8 hours the right number to enter?

8 hours is just a common default. Enter your own real average nightly sleep for a more accurate total, since actual sleep needs vary by person.

Can I calculate sleep for a past year or a custom range?

Yes. Change the start and end dates to any range you like, such as a full past year or since a specific milestone date.

Is my data saved anywhere?

No. The calculation happens locally in your browser and nothing you enter is stored or uploaded by this tool.
