Understanding the conversion

Hourly and salaried pay are two ways of describing the same income, and the conversion is straightforward once you know how many hours you actually work. Part-time schedules, unpaid time off, and seasonal work all change the weeks-per-year figure, so adjust it to match your real schedule for an accurate result.

Hourly to salary

Weekly pay = hourly wage × hours per week. Annual pay = weekly pay × weeks per year.

Salary to hourly

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ weeks per year ÷ hours per week.

Biweekly vs. monthly

Biweekly pay is simply weekly pay doubled. Monthly pay divides the annual total by 12, which is not the same as two biweekly paychecks.

How do I convert an hourly wage to a salary?

Multiply your hourly wage by your hours per week to get weekly pay, then multiply weekly pay by the weeks you work per year to get your annual salary.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by the number of weeks worked per year, then divide that weekly figure by your hours per week.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly pay happens every two weeks, for 26 paychecks a year, and is simply weekly pay doubled. Semimonthly pay happens twice a month, for 24 paychecks a year, and is annual pay divided by 24.
