Why use this density calculator

Any of the three

Solve for density, mass or volume with one tool.

Mixed units

Grams with cubic inches or pounds with litres all work.

Real-world context

Compare with common materials and see whether it floats.

How to calculate density

  1. Choose what to findDensity, mass or volume.
  2. Enter the other twoPick units for each, or choose a material to fill in its density.
  3. Read the answerSee it in every common unit with the formula used.

The density formula

Density is mass per unit volume: ρ = m / V. Rearranged, mass is m = ρ × V and volume is V = m / ρ. Because the units must match, the calculator converts everything to kilograms and cubic metres first and then converts the answer back into the units you chose.

Water has a density of about 1 g/cm³ (1000 kg/m³), which makes it a handy reference: anything denser sinks and anything less dense floats. Densities change slightly with temperature and, for gases, strongly with pressure, so the material values shown are typical figures near room temperature.

1 g/cm³

Equals 1000 kg/m³, 1 g/mL and 1 kg/L.

1 lb/ft³

Equals about 16.018 kg/m³.

Archimedes

Find the volume of an odd shape by how much water it displaces.

Density calculator FAQ

What is the formula for density?

Density equals mass divided by volume, ρ = m / V.

How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?

Multiply by 1000. For example 2.7 g/cm³ is 2700 kg/m³.

How do I find the volume of an irregular object?

Submerge it in water and measure the rise in water level or the overflow. That volume of water equals the object's volume.

Why does ice float?

Ice is about 917 kg/m³, less dense than liquid water at about 1000 kg/m³.

Are the material densities exact?

No. They are typical values; real materials vary with composition, temperature and porosity.
