Women's sizes are the most confusing. A US 8 is a UK and Australian 12, a French or Spanish 40 and an Italian 44, because each country counts from a different base. Men's tailoring is more consistent: US and UK suit sizes are the chest in inches, and EU sizes are roughly the chest in inches plus 10. Dress shirts are sized by neck, in inches in the US and UK and centimeters in Europe. Pants are sized by waist, and EU trouser sizes are about the waist in inches plus 16. These are standard conversions. Cuts and vanity sizing vary between brands, so check the brand's size guide when you can.
S, M and L vary more than numeric sizes. Use them only as a rough guide and check the brand's measurements.
Chest, waist, hips and neck in centimeters or inches are the most reliable way to choose a size from any brand's chart.
A US 8 is a UK 12, an EU (French/Spanish) 40, an Italian 44 and an Australian 12.
EU suit sizes are roughly the US/UK chest size plus 10. A 40R jacket is about an EU 50.
The US/UK neck size in inches converts to European centimeters. For example, 15.5 in is about 39 cm and 16 in is about 41 cm.
German women's sizes are usually 2 smaller than French sizes. A French 40 is a German 38. This chart lists the French/Spanish size as EU.
Brands use different fits and sizing, so conversions are approximate. Treat the chart as a starting point.
