Every entry uses the hanging indent style required by APA, MLA and Chicago reference lists.
A hanging indent is a paragraph style where the first line sits flush against the left margin while every subsequent line of the same entry is indented, typically by half an inch. It exists so a reader scanning a reference list can immediately spot where one entry ends and the next begins, since the flush-left line is always the start of a new source. APA calls this the reference list, MLA calls it the works-cited page, and Chicago's author-date system calls it the reference list too, but all three require the hanging indent and all three sort entries alphabetically by the first author's last name. When a source has no listed author, such as some organizational reports or anonymous web pages, it is alphabetized by its title instead, ignoring leading articles like "A" or "The." Getting the order and indentation right is a small detail that graders and editors notice quickly, since a misordered or flush-formatted list is one of the more common formatting mistakes in student papers.
