More than a visual guess

Know exactly what kind of transparency is inside

A transparent background is stored as alpha information. This checker reads the real pixels, so it can tell the difference between genuine transparency and a checkerboard baked into the artwork.

0%

Fully transparent pixels

Completely invisible pixels form clear backgrounds, cutouts and empty space around a subject.

100%

Fully opaque pixels

Opaque pixels completely cover anything behind them, even when the file stores an alpha channel.

Three quick steps

How to check PNG transparency online

  1. 01
    Add a PNG image

Choose a PNG from your phone or computer, or drag it into the Alpha Inspector.

  2. 02
    Read the exact scan

See whether transparency exists, plus counts for clear, partial-alpha and opaque pixels.

  3. 03
    Inspect every edge

Preview the image over checkerboard, white, dark and coral backgrounds to spot halos or rough cutouts.

A checkerboard can lie. Alpha values cannot.

Some images only look transparent because gray squares were saved into the picture. This PNG transparency checker examines actual opacity data instead.

Transparent PNG checker FAQ

How do I know if my PNG has a transparent background?

Add it to the checker above. A real transparent PNG contains pixels with alpha below 100% opacity. The result shows the exact number of fully and partly transparent pixels.

Does a checkerboard pattern mean transparency?

Not always. Design apps use a checkerboard to represent clear areas, but those squares can accidentally be exported as part of the image. This tool reads pixel alpha, so a baked-in pattern will correctly report as opaque.

What is the difference between transparent and semi-transparent?

A fully transparent pixel is invisible. A semi-transparent pixel lets some of the background show through and is common around smooth cutout edges, drop shadows and translucent objects.

Can a PNG have an alpha channel and still be opaque?

Yes. The file format may include an alpha channel even when every alpha value is fully opaque. The result calls this out separately so you know the channel exists but no background shows through.

Is this online PNG transparency checker private?

Yes. The image is decoded and scanned locally by your browser. It is never uploaded to My Panda Toolbox or stored by this tool.

Will this checker change or compress my PNG?

No. It only reads the file and creates a temporary local preview. Your original PNG remains untouched.
