Hearing check

Sound Frequency Hearing Test

How high can you hear? Play a rising sweep and stop it when the tone disappears, check your low end too, and see how your result compares with typical hearing by age.

Protect your ears: start with the volume low and raise it slowly. Use headphones for best results, and stop if anything feels uncomfortable. This is not a medical hearing test.

Why test your hearing range

Curiosity, answered

Find out how high you can hear and how that compares with typical hearing for your age.

Check your gear

Sweeps also reveal where your headphones or speakers stop reproducing sound.

Notice changes

Repeat the test now and then to spot changes, and see a professional if you are concerned.

How to take the hearing test

  1. Set a safe volumePut on headphones, start at a low volume and play a 1 kHz tone to set a comfortable level.
  2. Run the high sweepStart the high sweep and press the button the moment the tone disappears.
  3. Check the low endRun the low sweep and stop it when the rumble fades out.

How the frequency test works

A pure sine tone glides smoothly between two frequencies on a logarithmic scale, so each octave takes the same time. When you press stop, the frequency playing at that moment is recorded. The high sweep starts at 8 kHz, which almost everyone can hear, and rises to the limit of your device's audio output.

Hearing for high frequencies naturally declines with age, a change called presbycusis, and is also affected by noise exposure. The age table gives a rough guide based on commonly cited thresholds, not a diagnosis. Many laptop and phone speakers cannot play tones above about 16 to 18 kHz, so use good headphones.

20 Hz to 20 kHz

The textbook range of human hearing, mostly reached only in childhood.

Logarithmic sweep

Equal time per octave matches how we perceive pitch.

Device limits

Audio output tops out just below half the sample rate, usually 22 to 24 kHz.

Hearing frequency test FAQ

Is this a medical hearing test?

No. It is a rough self-check. A real audiogram measures hearing thresholds at many frequencies in a calibrated setting. See an audiologist if you notice hearing loss or ringing.

Why can I not hear anything above 16 kHz?

It may be your hearing, which is normal for many adults, or your speakers. Try good headphones before drawing conclusions.

Is the test loud?

The default volume is low. High frequencies can be unpleasant even at modest levels, so keep the volume comfortable and do not increase it to chase a tone.

Why test each ear?

Hearing can differ between ears. Choose left or right to play the tone in one ear only.

What is the mosquito tone?

A tone around 17 kHz that many adults cannot hear but most teens can. Try the 17k preset in the tone generator.
