Why use this cube timer

Competition style

Hold to arm, release to start and any key to stop, exactly like a stackmat.

Real averages

Ao5 and Ao12 drop the best and worst solves, with DNF rules matching the WCA.

Fresh scrambles

Every solve gets a new random-move scramble for your puzzle.

How to time a solve

  1. Scramble the cubeHold the cube with white on top and green in front, then apply the scramble shown.
  2. Arm and startHold space or press the timer until it turns green, then release to start solving.
  3. Stop and reviewPress any key or tap to stop. Add +2 or DNF if needed and watch your averages update.

How cubing averages work

Speedcubers rarely quote a single time. An average of 5 (Ao5) takes five consecutive solves, removes the best and the worst, and averages the middle three, which is the format used in official WCA rounds. An Ao12 removes one best and one worst from twelve. Larger averages, like Ao50 and Ao100, trim 5% from each end. A DNF counts as the worst result, so one DNF can be dropped, but two make the whole Ao5 a DNF.

With WCA inspection on, you get 15 seconds to look at the cube before starting. Starting between 15 and 17 seconds adds a +2 penalty and starting after 17 seconds is a DNF, both applied automatically.

Notation

R means turn the right face clockwise, R' counter-clockwise and R2 twice.

Wide moves

Rw turns the two right layers together on 4x4 and 5x5.

Scramble length

10 moves for 2x2, 20 for 3x3, 40 for 4x4 and 60 for 5x5.

Cube timer FAQ

How do I start and stop the timer?

Hold the spacebar (or press and hold the timer on a touch screen) until the time turns green, then let go to start. Press any key or tap anywhere on the timer to stop.

Are these official WCA scrambles?

They are random-move scrambles that avoid redundant moves. Official 3x3 scrambles use random-state generators, but random-move scrambles are standard for practice.

How is a DNF handled in averages?

A DNF counts as the slowest solve. If an average has more DNFs than solves it can drop, the whole average is DNF.

Are my times saved?

Yes. Each puzzle has its own session saved in this browser. Export to CSV to keep a backup.

Can I hide the time while solving?

Yes. Tick Hide time while solving to see only the word solve until you stop.
