Understanding your ideal weight estimate

Ideal body weight formulas were originally developed to help estimate medication dosing, and later became popular as general reference weights. This calculator averages three well-known formulas and adds a practical ±10% range around that average.

Devine formula

Men: 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60). Women: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60), in kilograms.

Robinson & Hamwi formulas

Robinson and Hamwi use similar height-based logic with slightly different constants, giving a useful spread of estimates.

A limitation to know

None of these formulas account for muscle mass, bone density or frame size, so treat the range as a starting point, not a target.

What formulas are used to estimate ideal weight?

This calculator uses three classic formulas — Devine, Robinson and Hamwi — which estimate ideal body weight from height and sex, and averages the three.

Why do the three formulas give different results?

Each formula was developed from a different population and era, so results vary slightly. Averaging them gives a more balanced estimate.

What is the healthy range shown?

The range is the averaged estimate plus or minus 10%, a practical band rather than a strict cutoff.

Do these formulas account for muscle mass or frame size?
