About the Islamic calendar

The Hijri calendar is purely lunar, with no leap month to keep it aligned to the seasons. That is deliberate: it means Ramadan and the pilgrimage season cycle through the whole solar year over roughly 33 years, so no region carries the burden of a long summer fast permanently. Conversion is straightforward once a calculated calendar such as Umm al-Qura fixes the month lengths in advance.

Twelve lunar months

Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Akhirah, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qadah and Dhu al-Hijjah.

Calculated vs observed

Umm al-Qura is calculated in advance for civil use, while religious dates are commonly confirmed by moon sighting on the night before.

Why the year drifts

A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar one, so Hijri dates fall earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year.

Sacred months

Muharram, Rajab, Dhu al-Qadah and Dhu al-Hijjah are the four months in which warfare was traditionally forbidden.

Hijri calendar converter FAQ

Questions about Umm al-Qura, moon sighting and date ranges.

What is the Hijri calendar?

It is the Islamic lunar calendar, counted from the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. It has twelve lunar months and a year of about 354 days, so Hijri dates move roughly eleven days earlier in the Gregorian year each year.

What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?

It is the calculated Hijri calendar used officially in Saudi Arabia for civil purposes. Month lengths are determined by astronomical calculation in advance rather than by observation, which makes it possible to convert dates precisely.

Why does the date I was given differ by a day?

Religious observance in many countries depends on the actual sighting of the crescent moon, which can fall a day either side of the calculated date and varies by location. Treat calculated conversions as a reliable guide, not a ruling.

How many days are in a Hijri month?

Either 29 or 30, following the lunar cycle of about 29.53 days. This converter reports the exact length of whichever month your date falls in.

What range of dates does this cover?

The Umm al-Qura tables in browsers typically span roughly 1300 to 1600 AH, which is about 1882 to 2174 CE. Outside that window results fall back to an arithmetical approximation.
