In "split evenly" mode everyone pays the same share. In "split by item" mode, each person pays their own items plus a share of tip and tax proportional to their item subtotal.

How to use the group bill splitter

This free tool splits a shared bill fairly among any size group. Enter the bill subtotal, tip percentage and tax rate, choose whether to split evenly or by each person's items, then add everyone in your group. The calculation runs locally in your browser, so your bill details are never uploaded or stored.

1. Enter the bill

Add the subtotal before tip, along with your tip and tax percentages.

2. Add your group

List each person, and their item total if splitting by item.

3. Review the split

See exactly what each person owes, plus a total sanity check.

Even split vs. split by item

An even split divides the whole bill — subtotal, tip and tax combined — equally by the number of people, which works well when everyone ordered roughly the same amount. A by-item split is fairer when orders vary a lot, since each person pays for what they actually had, plus a proportional share of tip and tax.

Even split formula

Each person pays (subtotal + tip + tax) ÷ number of people.

By-item split formula

Each person pays their item subtotal + (their item subtotal ÷ bill subtotal) × (tip + tax).

Keep it fair

For a by-item split, make sure everyone's item subtotals add up to the bill subtotal for the fairest result.

How does an even split work?

The bill subtotal, tip and tax are added together and divided equally by the number of people, so everyone pays the same amount regardless of what they ordered.

How does splitting by item work?

Each person pays their own item subtotal plus their proportional share of the tip and tax, based on how much of the bill's subtotal their items represent.

What if the item subtotals don't add up to the bill?

The tool flags any mismatch between the entered item subtotals and the bill subtotal so you can double-check amounts before splitting.

Is this bill splitter free and private?

Yes. It is free to use, and every number you enter is calculated locally in your browser rather than uploaded or stored.
