More than a list of eye colors

A character profile builder for fiction writers online

A memorable character is not assembled from trivia. They emerge from desire, pressure and contradiction. This free online character builder guides fiction writers through the details that create story: an external goal, an internal need, meaningful flaws, specific voice, costly secrets and relationships charged with history.

01

Discover the story fuel

Connect goal, motivation, conflict and stakes so your profile generates scenes instead of collecting facts.

02

Hear a distinct voice

Explore rhythm, vocabulary, fear and belief until the character sounds like a person only you could write.

03

Keep every draft private

Your character sheets autosave locally in this browser. No account, cloud upload or sign-up is required.

A practical writing method

Build outward from contradiction

Strong profiles stay flexible. Add only what creates decisions, friction or emotional specificity; leave room for the draft to surprise you.

  1. 1
    Start with desire

Give the character something concrete to pursue and a private reason it matters.

  2. 2
    Add pressure

Decide what opposes them, what failure costs and which flaw makes the problem worse.

  3. 3
    Test the change

Write the belief they begin with and the truth the story may force them to face.

Character profile builder FAQs

What should a fiction character profile include?

Focus on material that affects the story: role, goal, motivation, conflict, stakes, strengths, flaws, voice, formative backstory, key relationships and the arc of change. Physical description is most useful when it reveals history, habit or status.

Where are my character profiles saved?

They are stored in local storage in your current browser and are not uploaded by this tool. Clearing browser data can remove them, so use Export library to back up important work.

Can I use this for novels, screenplays and role-playing games?

Yes. The prompts work for novels, short stories, scripts, comics and narrative games. Use only the sections that serve your project and ignore anything that feels like busywork.

Can I export or move my character sheets?

Yes. Download a readable text profile for one character, or export the full cast as JSON. Import that JSON backup in another browser to continue.

Is this character profile builder online free?

Yes. This online character profile maker is free with no sign-up or installation required.
