How to use the audio channel splitter

Stereo audio is made of two independent channels, left and right. This free online tool reads both channels separately so you can inspect, preview and export each one on its own.

Why split audio into left and right channels?

Working with individual channels is useful any time you need to treat the two sides of a stereo recording differently, or check that a mix is balanced correctly.

Checking channel balance

Listening to each channel alone quickly reveals whether a recording is leaning too far to one side or has an unwanted hum on only one channel.

Dual-mono recordings

Some interviews and field recordings put one microphone entirely on the left and another entirely on the right. Splitting lets you use each source independently.

Extracting a panned element

If a vocal, instrument or backing track was mixed hard to one side, isolating that channel can help you hear it more clearly on its own.

What does splitting audio channels do?

It separates a stereo file into two independent mono files, one containing only what was in the left channel and one containing only what was in the right channel.

What happens if I upload a mono file?

If the file only has one channel, the left and right outputs will be identical since there is no second channel to separate.

What audio formats can I upload?

Any format your browser can decode, including MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG. Both channel outputs are exported as WAV files.
